Therapeutic Foster Care

- Many children with emotional problems are institutionalized far __from home - sometimes out of state - in order to receive __treatment.
- In 1995, there were over 26,000 substantiated cases of abuse and __neglect in Kentucky. These children are often in need of __extensive and varied therapeutic services.
- It is believed that many of these children could be successfully __treated within the community if qualified foster caregivers were __available. This would avoid the added trauma of being removed __from familiar surroundings, community, school, etc.
- The State of Kentucky is emphasizing community-based services __rather than institutionalization as being both cost-effective and __beneficial to children.
- Pennyroyal Center conducted a series of community discussions __earlier this year in each county in the Pennyroyal region to __determine what kinds of services are needed for children with __severe emotional difficulties. Therapeutic foster care was __determined to be a high priority need throughout the region.
- Pennyroyal Center is working to establish a network of therapeutic __foster homes throughout its service area (Caldwell, Christian, __Crittenden, Hopkins, Lyon, Muhlenberg, Todd, and Trigg __Counties).
- Pennyroyal Center will provide an extensive ten-week training __program and ongoing support for foster families.
- Foster parents will be involved with mental health professionals, __Community-Based Service workers, schools, and other __caregivers in developing and implementing an individualized __treatment program for each child.
- Foster parents are reimbursed for the cost of caring for foster __children.
